Tips for festival day 3

Today is the third day of InScience! Here are some recommendations for today. If you are planning to visit multiple programs, get the InScience ticket strip. With this ticket strip, you can visit three programs for €18.-.

film / saving brinton (tommy haines & andrew sherburne)

In the messy Iowa garage of the eccentric collector Michael Zahs you’ll find a collection of rare films, equipment, and documents by William Franklin Brinton. In this documentary, the passionate collector Mike attempts to restore these treasures to their former glory with the help of experts and other like-minded individuals. Because sometimes someone with a garage is passionate and patient enough to save a cinematic treasure from becoming lost to time.

Why do local cinema (hi)stories matter and how can you help writing them? Kathleen Lotze, researcher at University of Amsterdam, Oxford Brookes University and the University of Antwerp, invites you to a trip down memory lane and into the realm of lost films and bygone picture palaces.

This program starts at 13:30 in LUX 3. Tickets available here.

talk / philipp blom – what is at stake

The Western model of democracy and economy appears to be in crisis, post-war certainties, institutions, and alliances appear to be crumbling or melting away. Is this a blip in the system or evidence of fundamental upheaval? Climate change and digitization are unsettling societies, shaking political structures and impacting natural systems across the globe. In this context, the current crisis of democracy appears to be little more than an early symptom of a more profound transformation which may well overwhelm liberal ideals, human rights, and democratic participation.

This program starts at 19:30 in the Synthonzaal at LUX. Tickets available here.

diy-lab / keep your eyes open

Science opens your eyes. Find out how magnets work up close. Do you see the North and South Pole? You can also test your eye speed. Challenge other visitors and make sure all eyes are on you.

This program takes place from 15:00 – 20:00 in the Mariënburgkapel and has free entrance.

research / can you trick AI?

In recent years, we have made great strides in AI research. However, increasing machine intelligence does raise an important question: are we smart enough to fool an AI system? If not, what does that say about our power over and control of these systems? Researcher Hanna Schraffenberger from the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition, and Behaviour will attempt to answer these questions with you.

This program takes place from 13:00 – 18:00 in the library De Mariënburg and has free entrance.
